LEYDEN, MA – Philip H. Zimmerman, 85, of Leiden, passed away on September 15, 2021 at home with his wife by his side after a short illness. He was born in Greenfield, MA on March 29, 1936 to Marion (Miner) & Casper Zimmerman. He moved to Leiden at the age of one week and remained a resident of Leiden for the rest of his life. Phil attended Leyden Center School and graduated from Greenfield High School in 1953. He met the love of his life, former Ann Paulin, at square dancing at Leyden Town Hall. They were married on January 7, 1956 at St. Anne’s Church in Turners Falls, MA and had 65 years of love together.

Phil worked with his father on the dairy farm his parents owned until the spring of 1969. He then worked as a carpenter and painter, before working at Northfield Sand & Gravel and AR Sandri as a truck driver. In 1972 he started his own cattle trucking business and was joined by his younger brother and 2 sons and with them ran the business for 40 years. He retired in 2012. From 1997 until the spring of this year, Phil and Ann wintered at Mulberry FL where they made many new friends.

Phil started golf and won 2 league championships. It was quite an accomplishment for a man who had never played golf until the age of 61. While in Florida he was a board member for 3 years at the park where they lived, Lake Pointe Village. While in Florida he enjoyed sitting in their carport and visiting friends in the park. In his youth he enjoyed snowmobiling and was a member of the Leyden Ridge Runners Snowmobile Club. He and Ann bought a 5th wheel pickup and RV and for many years enjoyed the trips to Florida and sightseeing along the way. Phil was a long-time member of the Greenfield Moose Club and the Greenfield Elks Club.

He is survived by his wife, Ann; his children: Terry (Jim) Rae and Bruce (Andrea) Zimmerman: his grandchildren: Sarah (Steve) Fisher, Jim (Ashli) Rae Jr., Billy Zimmerman Jr. and his partner Taryn Crisafulli: two great-granddaughters ; : Ivy and Sawyer Rae who both had a very special place in his heart; her brother, Paul (Sally) Zimmerman and several nieces and nephews. Phil was predeceased by his parents, sister Elaine Kimball and son Bill Zimmerman Sr.

Phil’s family would like to thank his caregivers Michele Peila, Bonnie Rae and Bev Foley, the daughters of Guardian Angels, the staff at Charlene Manor and the nurses at Hospice of Franklin County for the excellent care they provided during his illness. .

Phil’s funeral will be on Saturday (9/25/2021) at 11:00 a.m. at Walker Funeral Home, 14 High Street, Greenfield, with the Reverend David Neil as officiant. There will be a one hour visit prior to the service, starting at 10:00 a.m. Interment will follow in the south cemetery of Leiden. In lieu of flowers, donations are requested in Phil’s name to Guardian Angels Concierge Services, LLC, 156 Colrain Stage Road, Colrain, MA 01340.
