Vernie was born on December 29, 1936 in Holloway of August and Helen (Erdman) Suckow. She grew up with five siblings, Florence, Mildred, Doreen, Doris and Harold.
In high school, Vernie participated in the Glee Club and choir, while also working at the local Central Drug in Starbuck. She was a devout Lutheran and was confirmed to Fron Lutheran at Starbuck. Vernie graduated from Starbuck High School and, shortly thereafter, married Richard M. Hagestuen on September 16, 1955. The two moved to Mandan, North Dakota, where they worked, lived, and raised their family. She loved music, nature, painting and singing.
For many years, Vernie worked as a volunteer for Hospice. She found great comfort in caring for others, as she was a natural caretaker. However, her greatest joy is being a mother, grandmother and great-grandmother. Some of the family’s most cherished keepsakes include snacks (with lumps of sugar and old hats), watermelon seed spitting contests on July 4th, and wonderful home-cooked meals, especially his lemon and lemon bread. poppy seeds.
Vernie and her late husband took many walks in the countryside with their dogs. Vernie also put a lot of energy into sewing Dawn and Kirsten’s clothes, creating beautiful dresses the two would wear to church. She also painted scenes from nature and even won a few competitions for her art.
